A Little History of Religion
Introduction
In my quest to understand the vast and enduring influence of religion, I stumbled upon: “A Little History of Religion” by Richard Holloway. This captivating read isn’t your typical religious novel. Holloway condenses a remarkable journey through the evolution of religious thought and practice into a surprisingly concise and comprehensive book. Imagine a crash course in religion, weaving together the rich tapestry of beliefs held by Taoists, Muslims, and everyone in between – both ancient and contemporary. Holloway brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, making this an engaging and informative exploration of humanity’s search for meaning.

Book Description
Holloway introduces you to religious origin, core beliefs and practices of the world’s major religions. From the ancient traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism to the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Holloway unpacks their unique philosophies and rituals. He also delves into lesser-known belief systems like Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism, offering a rich tapestry of humanity’s search for meaning. Holloway illuminates the lasting impact of these faiths on our societies, cultures, and even our daily lives. Whether you’re a lifelong believer, a curious skeptic, or simply seeking to broaden your perspective, “A Little History of Religion” offers a thought-provoking introduction to the enduring power of religion.
Pros
This novel is excellent in giving you a holistic introduction to practically every religion known to man. With the broad range of faiths discussed you gain a greater picture of what religion means to people, along with a timeline in which they were all founded and formed. Holloway not only describes the faith’s values but also the motivations behind each belief. The text is also relevant in this day and age as Holloway attempts to outline the significance of each faith and how it affects us today i.e. the meaning behind Hanukkah.
Cons
The main drawback is that the text goes into little depth. It will only give you a surface level insight into religion and you will have to do further research if you want to really grasp the tradition and beliefs of each faith. Some faiths are mentioned more than others. For instance Judaism is described more than Islam and smaller religions such as Zoroastrianism garner significant attention.
Who is this novel for?
The novel is for people with little knowledge of religion. Holloway’s accessible and concise approach makes this novel a great starting point. For those with vast religion knowledge, I would not recommend.
Conclusion

Despite, not going into great depth, I now know that this is a topic that I am interested in and further reading can help me gain a greater understanding of the religions and practices that interest me the most!
